<p>Anyhoo, as a result of a series of random conversations in work (and when I say random, I do mean random &#8211; that&#8217;s one of the great things about where I work), I challenged one of my colleagues to the <a href="http://www.bimbogami.co.uk/wp/desert-island-c90-challenge/">Desert Island C90 Challenge</a>.</p>
<p>I partook in this a year and a half ago and found it great fun &#8211; you should try it; If you could only take one c90 cassette (remember them kids?) of music to listen to for the rest of your life, what would you put on it?</p>
<p><span id="more-1339"></span>As I say, it came up in conversation, but it prompted me to look back on what I chose, to see if I would change anything on there.</p>
<p>Then I remembered that I posted <a href="http://www.bimbogami.co.uk/wp/youtube-spoilsports/">again </a>in March 2009 to say that the music industry were suing Youtube for unlicensed material unless it was removed. So I thought I&#8217;d check how many of the embedded videos I had added to my mixtape had survived. It made interesting reading.</p>
<p>So here we are; a naming and shaming of bands/artists out of my 2009 top 24 tracks that allowed their publishers to remove material under the guise of &#8216;copyright infringement&#8217;. Granted some of the artists are dead now, but let&#8217;s not let that get in the way of a rant. More than half of the tracks I chose are now barred on Youtube:</p>
<p>The Mamas &amp; Papas, The Rolling Stones, The Cocteau Twins, The Sex Pistols, Billy Talent, Bon Jovi, The Go Go&#8217;s, The Associates, Nirvana, Muse, U2, The Smiths and The Jam. Disappointing, given the amount of money I&#8217;ve contributed to those very bands through vinyl, CD, merchandise and gig tickets over the years.</p>
<p>And of the others; The Cult, Bluetones, Queens of the Stone Age, Stevie Wonder, Radiohead, Ugly Kid Joe, The Bangles, REM, Simon &amp; Garfunkel, Gary Jules, The Four Tops, all but two of them (The Bluetones and Gary Jules) were either live versions or soundtrack only with pics.</p>
<p>Perhaps &#8220;the man&#8221; doesn&#8217;t have as much control over the usage of those.<br />
So maybe I need to do a trawl for some live examples&#8230;</p>
<p>I even offer a &#8216;purchase&#8217; option on the post, giving those very fat cats a slice if someone paid.</p>
<p>Get a grip corporate sharks!</p>

<p>How do I know they have a new CD out, well I have had a flurry of new mySpace &#8216;friends notifications. In the last 3-4 days, I&#8217;ve had about 30 eMail notifications from mySpace.</p>
<p>I can&#8217;t say I&#8217;m a big fan of the Reggae/Ska genre. I can take it or leave it to be honest, but I do feel a bit of an affinity with my namesake and his pals in Kentucky, so props to the Rudies and all their friends!</p>

He was telling me he was at the Scottish Fashion Awards &#8216;do at the weekend because his pal was one of the organisers.</p>
<p>I thought that all sounded all fine and well; maybe not the kind of thing I&#8217;d clamour to go to,until he told me who was sitting at his table.</p>
<p>Now, to have Clare Grogan sitting there would probably have been interesting enough; she&#8217;d be a good laugh, but to also had Siouxsie Sioux there, wow. Apparently she was dressed in a tight green catsuit and full Siouxsie makeup. Class.</p>
<p><span id="more-863"></span>Now, anyone that knows me will know that I am a big Siouxsie and the Banshees fan, from way back. They famously came into existence after Siouxsie took the stage at a gig in London&#8217;s 100 Club in 1976 where the Sex Pistols were topping the bill, and sung a punk version of the Lords Prayer. Still going after thirty-three years, 14 albums and 30 or so singles later, that shows a bit of staying power.</p>
<p>I would dearly have loved to have been on that table, and got a chance to talk to her about the old days and what it was like, in a proper muso-journo style, maybe for the NME. But, in all reality, I&#8217;d probably have just sat there grinning like a goon, unable to speak coherently.</p>
<p>Some interesting things people maybe didn&#8217;t know about the Banshees&#8230;</p>
<p>Although there was only a core of two main members; Siouxsie (born Susan Ballion) on vocals and Steve Severin (Steven Bailey) on Bass, Budgie (Peter Clarke) on Drums featured heavily in the peak of the band&#8217;s success.  A number of other &#8216;guests&#8217; featured with the band throughout their career, including Sid Viscious (pre Sex Pistols), Marco Pirroni (pre Adam and the Ants), Robert Smith (of The Cure) and John McGeoch (a Scot who played in Magazine, Visage and in a strange circle-of-life type thing, PIL).</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s a <a title="Top 10 Siouxsie" href="http://open.spotify.com/user/manicmorff/playlist/6BQWysuweMTQRwkSIqOY9y" target="_blank">wee collection of Banshees class</a> for the unfamiliar (Spotify required). Favourite track? For me it has to be &#8216;Arabian Knights&#8217;; great lyrics, gripping musically. Juju is probably my favourite Banshees album.</p>
<h4><strong>Arabian Knights</strong><br />
by Siouxsie and the Banshees</h4>
<p>The jewel, the prize<br />
looking into your eyes<br />
Cool pools drown your mind<br />
What else will you find</p>
<p>I hear a rumour, it was just a rumour<br />
I heard a rumour, what have you done to her</p>
<p>Myriad lights, they said I&#8217;d be impressed<br />
Arabian Knights, at your primitive best</p>
<p>A tourist oasis-reflects in seedy sunshades<br />
a monstrous oil tanker<br />
it&#8217;s it&#8217;s wound bleeding in seas</p>
<p>I heard a rumour, what have you done to her<br />
I heard a rumour, what have you done to her</p>
<p>Veiled behind screens<br />
Kept as your baby machine<br />
Whilst you conquer more orifices<br />
Of boys, goats and things<br />
Ripped out sheeps eyes, no forks or knives</p>
<p>Myriad lights, they said I&#8217;d be impressed<br />
Arabian Knights, at your primitive best</p>

Buy it at Amazon</a></div>
<p class="first-child "><span title="O" class="cap"><span>O</span></span>h yes! This is what eBay is all about. You remember something from the past, you have a look on eBay, place a speculative bid and lo and behold you win it. Then the anticipation as you wait for it to arrive, with a little bit of doubt creeping in as you wonder if will be as good as you remember it. Will the mists of time cloud your perspective and will it turn out to be really rubbish?</p>
<p>Late last week, after a conversation in work, I placed exactly such a speculative bid, won it at a rock bottom price and it arrived yesterday. I had kind-of half-forgotten about it, what with all that&#8217;s going on elsewhere just now, so it was a pleasant surprise to see the packet drop through the door.</p>
<p><span id="more-392"></span></p>
<p>So having ripped the packet open and seeing the tracklist and minimalist CD inlay (just a reformatted copy of the sleevenotes from the vinyl I suspect), the memories came flooding back, but I still had some nagging doubt that it may not quite be as good as I remembered.</p>
<p>Songs from the Wood by Jethro Tull was an album (yes, it really was on vinyl kids) I listened to many, many times when I was much, much younger than I am now. I was trying to work out in the car this morning exactly how long since I last heard it and reckon it is easily over twenty years. It was a different genre than I was really into at the time as I was into the end of punk stuff and &#8216;new wave&#8217; at that time, but a cousin of mine had the album (btw, a-la Undertones I actually do have a cousin called Kevin) and he first played this to me along with others of his when I visited. I couldn&#8217;t get into much of the other stuff he had, but I knew I liked this.</p>
<div class="alignleft" style="padding-top:5px;"><object width="125" height="125" data="http://ws.amazon.co.uk/widgets/q?ServiceVersion=20070822&amp;MarketPlace=GB&amp;ID=V20070822%2FGB%2Fbimbogami-21%2F8014%2F6430f927-c0c6-4f07-aec6-96ae04d01a72&amp;Operation=GetDisplayTemplate" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"><param name="id" value="Player_6430f927-c0c6-4f07-aec6-96ae04d01a72" /><param name="quality" value="high" /><param name="bgcolor" value="#FFFFFF" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><param name="src" value="http://ws.amazon.co.uk/widgets/q?ServiceVersion=20070822&amp;MarketPlace=GB&amp;ID=V20070822%2FGB%2Fbimbogami-21%2F8014%2F6430f927-c0c6-4f07-aec6-96ae04d01a72&amp;Operation=GetDisplayTemplate" /><param name="name" value="Player_6430f927-c0c6-4f07-aec6-96ae04d01a72" /><param name="align" value="middle" /></object> <noscript>&amp;amp;lt;A HREF=&#8221;http://ws.amazon.co.uk/widgets/q?ServiceVersion=20070822&amp;amp;amp;#038;MarketPlace=GB&amp;amp;amp;#038;ID=V20070822%2FGB%2Fbimbogami-21%2F8014%2F6430f927-c0c6-4f07-aec6-96ae04d01a72&amp;amp;amp;#038;Operation=NoScript&#8221; mce_HREF=&#8221;http://ws.amazon.co.uk/widgets/q?ServiceVersion=20070822&amp;amp;amp;amp;MarketPlace=GB&amp;amp;amp;amp;ID=V20070822%2FGB%2Fbimbogami-21%2F8014%2F6430f927-c0c6-4f07-aec6-96ae04d01a72&amp;amp;amp;amp;Operation=NoScript&#8221;&amp;amp;gt;Amazon.co.uk Widgets&amp;amp;lt;/A&amp;amp;gt;</noscript><br />
Get it on MP3</div>
<p>Anyhoo, it&#8217;s not a particularly long album at 9 tracks but well worth a listen. It&#8217;s essentially what you&#8217;d call a &#8216;themed&#8217; album; in this case all songs being woodland related fnnily enough. On re-listening, all this time later, the album really evokes a sense of the countryside of days-gone-by, with vivid lyrical imagery of gamekeepers, farm-hands, tweed, hunting and shooting, faeries, good fellows and fair maidens. All that on top of an excellent production, comprising an ecclectic mix of instruments topped by Ian Anderson&#8217;s fantastically energetic flute, giving a very rich musical experience indeed.</p>
<p>It is easily as good an album as I remembered it to be, perhaps even a bit better, and one of those albums that you&#8217;re hard pushed to find a bad/filler song in. Oh, and yes, I still remember all the lyrics. <img src='http://www.bimbogami.co.uk/wp/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':)' class='wp-smiley' /> </p>
<p>In summary, I&#8217;d recommend sticking with your instincts and buying whatever tat your nostalgic-bone takes you to on eBay &#8211; there are some real gems out there to be had.</p>

<p>i) They were all addressed to &#8216;me&#8217; at my domain,  ii) They were exclusively new &#8216;friends&#8217; on MySpace and iii) the majority seemed to have ska/rudeboy/grrl oriented names or pages on MySpace, the latest of which being Lynval Golding of the Specials and Lee &#8216;Scratch&#8217; Perry.</p>
<p><span id="more-233"></span>Now I&#8217;ve never been a member of MySpace and I&#8217;ve never really admitted my secret love of all things Two-Tone and ska-related to anyone, so it all seemed a bit strange.  I therefore decided I should try to get to the bottom of it&#8230;</p>
<p><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-252" title="The Rudies, jus' chillin'" src="http://www.bimbogami.co.uk/wp/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/rudies3-300x225.jpg" alt="The Rudies, jus' chillin'" width="171" height="129" />Some digging around got me to <a title="The Rudies on MySpace" href="http://www.myspace.com/therudies" target="_blank">The Rudies</a> MySpace page; an apparently popular, gigging Ska/Reggae/Rudeboy band from Lexington, Kentucky in the US with 781 MySpace friends (and counting). The line up of; Jerrod Figgs (Lead Singer, Dread pipes of doom), Jeff Rice (Guitar), Steve Cherry (Bass, low frequency, originator), Tim &#8216;the juice&#8217; Welch (Drums, manipulator of the spheres) and Dave Clark (T. Sax) are on the left there.  Main man Jerrod is the second from the right in the photo.</p>
<p><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-253" title="Steve McCallum the IV" src="http://www.bimbogami.co.uk/wp/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/smciv1.jpg" alt="Steve McCallum the IV" width="170" height="113" />Still no real idea where the connection to me was.  Then, I found it; the first friend in The Rudies&#8217; list of friends on MySpace is non other than&#8230; <a title="Steve McCallum the IV" href="http://www.myspace.com/6583163" target="_blank">Steve McCallum the IV</a>, a three-piece salsa/reggae/crunk band with a separate MySpace page and 646 friends.  That&#8217;s them on the right there, comprising; Steve McCallum, Randy Westbrook (keyboard) and Ben Davis (drums) &#8211; that&#8217;s &#8216;me&#8217; on the trombone.  They&#8217;re from Evansville, Indiana in the US.</p>
<p>So in a plot-line that Columbo would have been proud of, I reckon it went something like this:  Steve plays in a band and decides in 2004 to set up a MySpace page.  Somehow, a year or so later, the paths of Steve and The Rudies somehow cross and Steve is invited to set up their MySpace page.  A task he duly undertook in 2006, using an eMail address attached to a domain he owned at the time.  And the rest you can make up for yourself.</p>
<p>What next?  Get in touch with them or just live with the MySpace spamming?  Not sure.</p>

I was always a big fan of the cassette tape back in the day, but alas they are long gone from my house now, with the advent of CD&#8217;s and such.</p>
<p>Still, I was keen to make an entry this year, having run out of time last year for his <a href="http://www.scottliddell.com/2008/06/amazon-desert-island-challenge.html">Amazon challenge</a>. And, glad to say, I made it, with a few hours to spare on Hogmanay. Now, with a little bit more time on my hands, I can add some commentary on the choices I made and link in some vids for those that may be interested to see.</p>
<p><span id="more-9"></span>I found it extremely tough, and I&#8217;ve since come up with others that should have made the cut, but that&#8217;s the thing with these &#8216;snapshots in time&#8217;: you only get one chance.</p>
<p>Anyhoo, as published on Scott&#8217;s blog:</p>

<h4>1. Mamas and Papas &#8211; California Dreamin&#8217;: 2:39</h4>
<div class="alignleft">
<div class="alignright"><object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="445" height="364" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/dN3GbF9Bx6E&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1&amp;rel=0&amp;color1=0x5d1719&amp;color2=0xcd311b&amp;border=1" /><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="445" height="364" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/dN3GbF9Bx6E&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1&amp;rel=0&amp;color1=0x5d1719&amp;color2=0xcd311b&amp;border=1" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object></div>
<p>Starting things off at a nice relaxed and chilled-out pace, we have a example of easily one of the most well-known harmonising bands of the 60&#8242;s. Featuring, of course, the lovely Michelle Philips.</p>
<p>This track has the added benefit of being nice and short, so helping maximise the overall track-count.</p>
<p>Who doesn&#8217;t like this?</p>
</div>
<h4>2. Rolling Stones &#8211; Gimme Shelter: 4:30</h4>
<div class="alignleft">
<div class="alignright"><object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="250" height="203" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="data" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/LJMnES7WoT4&amp;hl=" /><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/LJMnES7WoT4&amp;hl=" /><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="250" height="203" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/LJMnES7WoT4&amp;hl=" allowfullscreen="true" data="http://www.youtube.com/v/LJMnES7WoT4&amp;hl="></embed></object></div>
<p>Another 60&#8242;s band, although this was released in 1970. Stones vs. Beatles was the equivalent of Oasis vs. Blur in the 90&#8242;s. I would&#8217;ve been in the Stones camp then, were I old enough.</p>
<p>As for this particular song, I love the haunting feel it has, which puts it ahead of what could have been more &#8216;classic&#8217; Stones picks.</p>
</div>
<h4>3. Cocteau Twins &#8211; Musette and Drums: 4:12</h4>
<div class="alignleft">
<div class="alignright"><object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="250" height="203" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="data" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/y1PiE2DeyxE&amp;hl=" /><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/y1PiE2DeyxE&amp;hl=" /><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="250" height="203" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/y1PiE2DeyxE&amp;hl=" allowfullscreen="true" data="http://www.youtube.com/v/y1PiE2DeyxE&amp;hl="></embed></object></div>
<p>For all the criticism they get, I kinda like the fact there are no real lyrics in the songs, just made up words and sounds from the amazing Liz and jangly echoey guitars from Robin.</p>
<p>It doesn&#8217;t stop you from singing along &#8211; who can tell if you&#8217;re right or wrong?</p>
<p>The video&#8217;s a bit grainy, I recognise it from &#8220;The Tube&#8221; in &#8217;83. I had this vid stashed on a VHS (which also had &#8220;The Colourfield&#8221; doing &#8220;The Colourfield&#8221;), which was sadly lost in the great &#8216;throwing things at Scotts head&#8217; event of the late &#8217;90s.</p>
<p>This takes me back to my long train journeys between Glasgow and Oxford back in the early 80&#8242;s&#8230;</p>
<h4>4. Sex Pistols &#8211; Pretty Vacant: 3:15</h4>
<div class="alignleft">
<div class="alignright"><object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="250" height="202" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="data" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/uOQ4f7YItX8&amp;hl=" /><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/uOQ4f7YItX8&amp;hl=" /><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="250" height="202" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/uOQ4f7YItX8&amp;hl=" allowfullscreen="true" data="http://www.youtube.com/v/uOQ4f7YItX8&amp;hl="></embed></object></div>
<p>The archetypal anti-establishment band of the punk period. I&#8217;ve probably gone for the obvious one here and would get the QI alarm going off right now. In my defense, I would have picked another more obscure track from the acetate Pistols album I have but I couldn&#8217;t find it on Amazon to get the track timing from.</p>
<p>I re-listened to a lot of the old punk stuff on last.fm recently and was strangely surprised how poor the production was on it, we&#8217;re spoiled these days &#8211; but it wasn&#8217;t about the production, it was about being there, then.</p>
</div>
<h4>5. Cult &#8211; Rain: 3:56</h4>
<div class="alignleft">
<div class="alignright"><object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="250" height="203" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="data" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/v2GtrGnAIRk&amp;hl=" /><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/v2GtrGnAIRk&amp;hl=" /><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="250" height="203" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/v2GtrGnAIRk&amp;hl=" allowfullscreen="true" data="http://www.youtube.com/v/v2GtrGnAIRk&amp;hl="></embed></object></div>
<p>Anyone who knows my taste in music would probably guess that something from the goth rock genre really had to make an appearence on the tape.</p>
<p>There were a couple of options to choose from, but in the end it was the Cult that just beat the Sisters of Mercy to the post (don&#8217;t want to overdo it now, do we?)</p>
</div>
<h4>6. Billy Talent &#8211; Fallen Leaves: 3:19</h4>
<div class="alignleft">
<div class="alignright"><object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="250" height="203" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="data" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/l3b3WF3gKjk&amp;hl=" /><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/l3b3WF3gKjk&amp;hl=" /><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="250" height="203" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/l3b3WF3gKjk&amp;hl=" allowfullscreen="true" data="http://www.youtube.com/v/l3b3WF3gKjk&amp;hl="></embed></object></div>
<p>Found these guys while flicking around the music channels one day, from a great album, which I may even do a review of someday.</p>
<p>This is a classic angry young man punkish track with a rather surreal video.</p>
</div>
<p><a href="http://www.bimbogami.co.uk/wp?p=9">Top</a></p>
<h4>7. Bon Jovi &#8211; Keep the Faith: 5:43</h4>
<div class="alignleft">
<p>No embedding of this video allowed for some strange reason, so here&#8217;s a <a href="http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=B6R4LUPPngA">clicky linky</a> to it.<br />
Some might think a strange choice for me, but hey if you&#8217;re going to pick a hair-rock track to include, then why not this staple from John-Bon himself. Classic sing-along-a-rock.</p>
</div>
<h4>8. Bluetones &#8211; Marblehead Johnson: 3:21</h4>
<div class="alignleft">
<div class="alignright"><object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="250" height="203" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="data" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Ts-NtP-euKI&amp;hl=" /><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Ts-NtP-euKI&amp;hl=" /><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="250" height="203" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Ts-NtP-euKI&amp;hl=" allowfullscreen="true" data="http://www.youtube.com/v/Ts-NtP-euKI&amp;hl="></embed></object></div>
<p>Fantastic track from a much under-rated band, with a cool, de-doodley-doodley guitar riff.</p>
<p>Whatever happened to The Bluetones?  No, wait, that&#8217;s a rhetorical question, yes I have Google if I really wanted to know.</p>
</div>
<h4>9. The Go Gos &#8211; Our Lips are Sealed: 2:45</h4>
<div class="alignleft">
<div class="alignright"><object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="250" height="203" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="data" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/6BhmqMt_CkU&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1" /><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/6BhmqMt_CkU&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1" /><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="250" height="203" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/6BhmqMt_CkU&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" data="http://www.youtube.com/v/6BhmqMt_CkU&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1"></embed></object></div>
<p>A wee bit of poppy magic, much better than the later collaboration by Fun Boy Three, despite what Scott may believe.</p>
<p>Still not mastered that bassline yet&#8230; Bwaow-boom-boo-do-do-do-do.</p>
</div>
<h4>10. Queens Of The Stone Age &#8211; No One Knows: 4:38</h4>
<div class="alignleft">
<div class="alignright"><object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="250" height="202" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="data" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/NkH2i0fyowc&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1" /><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/NkH2i0fyowc&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1" /><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="250" height="202" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/NkH2i0fyowc&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" data="http://www.youtube.com/v/NkH2i0fyowc&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1"></embed></object></div>
<p>Crank up the tempo again as we head for the finish line on side one. Down to a toss-up between three tracks from QOTSA.</p>
<p>So here he have Josh Homme in fine form, a great guitarist as evidenced by his solo, acoustic perfomance of this song on the Live Lounge 2 album.</p>
</div>

<p>The stunning vocal telent of the late Billy McKenzie, he appears to be one of those love-him or hate-him characters. All I can say is he&#8217;s on my C90.</p>
<p>No MP3 of this track available on amazon for this at time of writing.</p>

<p>Kicking off side 2 with a true standard and guess what, you didn&#8217;t even have to spin the tape on to the end before turning it over, so you don&#8217;t miss any of that classic introduction.</p>
<p>The tune that heralded a new genre of music, and a corresponding new onslaught of bands.</p>

<h4>2. Muse &#8211; Hysteria: 3:47</h4>

<p>When you have to pick on from so many great tracks, it&#8217;s never easy.</p>
<p>For me this one sums them up with a bit of everything; great bass, great riffs, great drums, and a huge amount of energy, that&#8217;s what I like to hear from them and stunning live.</p>
</div>
<h4>3. Radiohead &#8211; Lucky: 4:19</h4>
<div class="alignleft">

<p>Again, how do you pick one from that back-catalogue. For me though, the choice of track is a no-brainer, just listen and love it.</p>
</div>
<h4>4. U2 &#8211; One: 4:37</h4>
<div class="alignleft">
<div class="alignright"><object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="250" height="203" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="data" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/VeGPxEHBIHs&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1" /><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/VeGPxEHBIHs&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1" /><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="250" height="203" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/VeGPxEHBIHs&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" data="http://www.youtube.com/v/VeGPxEHBIHs&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1"></embed></object></div>
<p>Was considering the anthemic &#8220;Where the Streets Have No Name&#8221;, but already had jangly guitars on here, so went for the more emotive, and better, One.</p>
</div>
<h4>5. Ugly Kid Joe &#8211; Cats In The Cradle: 4:02</h4>
<div class="alignleft">
<div class="alignright"><object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="250" height="202" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="data" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/ef2TVwNjjD8&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1" /><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/ef2TVwNjjD8&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1" /><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="250" height="202" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/ef2TVwNjjD8&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" data="http://www.youtube.com/v/ef2TVwNjjD8&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1"></embed></object></div>
<p>Not the original version, but I think a better one, &#8216;cos it&#8217;s got guitars in. A song with a story, I like that. And no, the original wasn&#8217;t by Cat Stevens, it was a 1 hit wonder by Harry Chapin.</p>
</div>
<h4>6. The Smiths &#8211; How Soon Is Now? 3:58</h4>
<div class="alignleft">
<div class="alignright"><object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="250" height="203" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="data" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/K2NrIALcNOw&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1" /><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/K2NrIALcNOw&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1" /><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="250" height="203" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/K2NrIALcNOw&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" data="http://www.youtube.com/v/K2NrIALcNOw&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1"></embed></object></div>
<p>Another difficult pick from then extensive back catalogue of great tunes. For me this one has the perfect combination of Marr&#8217;s guitar genius and Morrisey&#8217;s clever lyricism.</p>
</div>

<h4>7. The Bangles &#8211; Hazy Shade of Winter: 2:47</h4>

<p>A great cover of the Simon and Garfunkel song, video clip includes clips from the film &#8220;Less than zero&#8221;, for which this was on the soundtrack. And it&#8217;s got Suzanna Hoffs on it, nuff said.</p>
</div>
<h4>8. The Jam &#8211; The Butterfly Collector: 3:05</h4>
<div class="alignleft">
<div class="alignright"><object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="250" height="203" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="data" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/HwGTAnzSn1I&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1" /><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/HwGTAnzSn1I&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1" /><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="250" height="203" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/HwGTAnzSn1I&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" data="http://www.youtube.com/v/HwGTAnzSn1I&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1"></embed></object></div>
<p>I think the only b-side that appears on this C90 (it appeared originally on the other side of Strange Town) and for me the best Jam track of them all.</p>
<p>Not your typical Jam here, more calm and melodic, but the chorus kicks in pretty good.</p>
</div>
<h4>9. REM &#8211; Orange Crush: 3:49</h4>
<div class="alignleft">
<div class="alignright"><object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="250" height="202" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="data" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/2BvXBwtrs_k&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1" /><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/2BvXBwtrs_k&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1" /><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="250" height="202" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/2BvXBwtrs_k&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" data="http://www.youtube.com/v/2BvXBwtrs_k&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1"></embed></object></div>
<p>As anti-war songs go, this one pretty much has it all. Helicopters, shouting, propeganda and the rat-tat-tat gunfire sound of the drums on the intro. A great song from one of their earlier albums: Green. Semper Fi!</p>
<p>Great live version here in the video.</p>
</div>
<h4>10. Simon and Garfunkel &#8211; The Sound of Silence: 3:04</h4>
<div class="alignleft">
<div class="alignright"><object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="250" height="202" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="data" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/9hUy9ePyo6Q&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1" /><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/9hUy9ePyo6Q&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1" /><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="250" height="202" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/9hUy9ePyo6Q&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" data="http://www.youtube.com/v/9hUy9ePyo6Q&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1"></embed></object></div>
<p>I&#8217;ve always loved this, it&#8217;s one for listening to at the end of the night, when it&#8217;s quiet and dark. A song that slowly builds and builds to a crescendo and then fading back down again to a close.</p>
</div>
<h4>11. Gary Jules &#8211; Mad World: 3:20</h4>
<div class="alignleft">
<div class="alignright"><object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="250" height="202" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="data" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/4N3N1MlvVc4&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1" /><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/4N3N1MlvVc4&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1" /><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="250" height="202" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/4N3N1MlvVc4&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" data="http://www.youtube.com/v/4N3N1MlvVc4&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1"></embed></object></div>
<p>A great song first time round (apart from the daft dancing on the video) by TFF and which I, if I recall correctly, predicted for great things by me back in the day.</p>
<p>Who knew that 20 years later I would correctly tip it for the top again when re-released by Gary Jules following its use in the Gears of War ad for the XBox 360. Strangely, this isn&#8217;t available via Amazon on Mp3 at time of writing.</p>
<p>This is of course the funky video for when it was released again.</p>
</div>
<h4>12. The Four Tops &#8211; Bernadette: 3:02</h4>
<div class="alignleft">
<div class="alignright"><object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="250" height="203" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="data" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/5pVM00eoohI&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1" /><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/5pVM00eoohI&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1" /><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="250" height="203" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/5pVM00eoohI&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" data="http://www.youtube.com/v/5pVM00eoohI&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1"></embed></object></div>
<p>Finishing off with a Motown classic, featuring the late, great Levi Stubbs. He&#8217;s on a roll here with all the emotion of a man singing about the jealousy other men have for his burd. And the old Motown 3 minute song rule done almost to perfection.</p>
<p>I&#8217;d normally put more motown on a tape, but then I didn&#8217;t have a C120 to play with this time&#8230;</p>
