Mac tips part 3

ejectBack on the trail of helpful Mac tips. Just two quickies this time round:

First, I had a CD that wouldn’t eject from my MacBook drive.

It was really stuck; the drive was spinning up and down but nothing in Finder, not even an icon. I was getting an occasional colourful spinning CD mousepointer, but nothing else. Pressing the eject button showed the eject icon on the screen but didn’t actually have any effect.

Not only that, it pretty much ate up the resources preventing starting of other apps etc. or even get to display the dock.

I searched around, and while there were a number of suggestions, none of them worked for this particular disk, but the following did…

Modern measure of a man

measure-manIn days gone by, the measure of a man was perhaps in his hunting prowess.

Going out into the wilderness, facing daily danger to bring food back to his tribe and family.

As the years have gone by, the measure has changed. With the advent of shops and supermarkets, modern man no longer has to stalk and hunt his prey.

So other measures have variously been used; His educational status, the money he earns, the clothes he wears, the car he drives. You name it.

Now I reckon there’s a new, modern-day candidate for the measure.

Coaster review: Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster

AerosmithA coaster this time from Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Orlando Florida. Also known as the Rock ‘n’ Roller Roller Coaster featuring Aerosmith.

I first went on this coaster back in 2003, with my eldest last time we were in Florida, and a couple of times again this time in 2009 with my new first-time 8-year-old coaster buddy.

This is a heavily themed ride, featuring a lot of music-related imagery, loud music; Aerosmith of course, and Rock ‘n’ Roll memorabilia all around the ride. Apparently in this attraction, the coaster was built first and then the building was constructed around it.

Coaster review: Kraken

krakenAnother coaster from SeaWorld Orlando. This one predates Manta by quite a few years but that in no way diminishes its quality as a great coaster.

I first went on this coaster back in 2003, with my eldest last time we were in Florida, and again this time in 2009.

I didn’t have to wait very long at all to get onto this one. Again, as a single rider it was fairly easy to get onto the back row of the coaster, the position of choice for the true coaster-fan.

Is Disney Eco-Friendly?

Eco FriendlyI remember years ago, when visiting DisneyWorld in Florida, an essential part of the holiday was getting a hire car for getting to and from your place of residence to the parks.

Each day you would drive to your park of choice, pay into the car park and have to park miles away from the entrance gate. Then you’d have to wait on the little road-train to take you to the gate, not forgetting of course to remember where where you parked your car.

At the end of the day, you’d queue again for your little road-train (like you hadn’t queued enough already) to get back to your car and head back home. Then you’d do it all again the next day, for a different park.

But there is another way, as we found on our recent trip.

Coaster review: Manta

Manta at SeaWorld OrlandoMy recent visit to Florida re-established my love of roller-coasters. My youngest has inherited the coaster-gene, so looks like I’ll have a coaster-buddy for some time to come.

As a result, I thought I would perhaps do a series of mini-reviews of coasters/rides I’ve been on over the years.

I’ll start with the newest coaster at Orlando at time of writing; Manta, at SeaWorld Orlando, which opened on 21 May 2009.

I rode this coaster on 6 July 2009, less than 2 months after opening. Unfortunately the height requirement ruled out my new buddy, so as a single rider, I braved the 40 minute queue in the baking sun.

Bimbogami breaks 2000 user barrier

bbg_main_logoI’ve not posted for a couple of weeks because I was on holiday in the US.

Back home now, happy but exhausted. More of that in future posts, so watch this space for my 2p on the Disney experience, the US in general and the start of a series of posts on my love of coasters.

For now, I am delighted to announce that on 6 July 2009, the puzzle site of choice for discerning riddle lovers everywhere, bimbogami, passed the 2000** user mark.

For anyone reading this blog an not familiar with bimbogami, please let me explain…

If I knew Siouxsie…

bansheesI was on a training course today and, off topic, was chatting to the trainer. He was telling me he was at the Scottish Fashion Awards ‘do at the weekend because his pal was one of the organisers.

I thought that all sounded all fine and well; maybe not the kind of thing I’d clamour to go to,until he told me who was sitting at his table.

Now, to have Clare Grogan sitting there would probably have been interesting enough; she’d be a good laugh, but to also had Siouxsie Sioux there, wow. Apparently she was dressed in a tight green catsuit and full Siouxsie makeup. Class.

Next 5 things for your mac

Mac LogoHot on the heels of the similarly titled post, I have a few other gems I’ve come across or been pointed towards to make life on the good ship MacBook that little bit more simple. Not that it’s difficult in the first place, just different if you’re used to Windows.

Note: Feedback from the family, who are a mix of casual and regular PC users, would suggest the Mac is easy to use. So fear-ye not Mac virgins, this is not a platform (only) for the uber-geeks.

That said, if you *are* an uber-geek, there’s lots (and I mean lots) to float your boat here.

So, what do we have in the bag this time?

First 10 things to put on your new Mac

Mac OS X LeopardAs you may heve read from previous posts, and at the risk of boring any regular (aye right!) readers, I got a MacBook a short while back. It’s a bit of a migration for me, having uset a PC for most of my career. I published a list of keyboard shortcuts previously and heres a list of other things I’ve hunted down as ‘essentials’ for day to day work/play.

I know there are alternatives to all of the below, but these are the ones I plumped for. One prevailing factor influenced the choices below; they’re all open source/freeware. My budget for toys is dry following the arrival of the MacBook, so it’s cheapies or freebies for me for a while.

So here goes:
